The Work Permit
When you have submitted your application and all the required
documentation, and once your medical information has been processed, the
visa post will issue an Work Permit to you. This Work Permit is not a
travel document. To travel to Canada, you must still have a valid passport,
and you may be required to have a visitor’s visa depending on the country
you are coming from. Caregivers.ca will advise you of the travel documents
you will need.
Why is the Work Permit Important?
You must have a valid Work Permit to work in Canada as a live-in Caregiver. The Work Permit contains the name of your Canadian Employer, and allows you to only work for that Employer. This does not mean you can’t leave this job. It simply means that this particular Work Permit is valid only for your work with that one Employer. If you find another job as a live-in Caregiver, you can leave your Employer to work for the new Employer. But you will need to have another Work Permit issued to you before you begin working for the new Employer. It is illegal to work for an Employer if you don’t have a valid Work Permit that entitles you to work for that Employer.
When to Renew Your Work Permit
Work Permits are valid for one (1) year, but can be renewed. Caregivers.ca
can renew your Work Permit on your behalf. However, it is your responsibility
to notify us so that we can ensure it is renewed before it expires. Working
with an expired Work Permit is illegal.
